Block b Comparing and Scaling The Big Idea Problem 3.2 Helping the cook The camp Cook must buy enough ingredients for all the meals he intends to prepare during the week. One of the Cook’s most popular meals is spaghetti. The spaghetti recipe he uses, calls for canned tomatoes. The CannedStuff store has large cans of tomatoes on sale, five cans cost $4.00. The cook says he can make sauce for five to six campers from each can o tomatoes. Problem 3.2 Suppose you are assigned to help the cook order supplies. How many cans of tomatoes would you advise the cook to buy to make spaghetti for 240 campers?Explain your answer. 240 = 40 6 I would advise the cook to order 40 cans of tomatoes for the 240 campers. How much would these cans of tomatoes coast altogether? $4.00 x 40=$160 It would cost $160 for 40 cans of tomatoes. Problem 3.2 Follow-up At the EatMore grocery store, you can buy seven cans of tomatoes for $6.00. The cans are the same size as the cans at the CannedStuff. Are the tomatoes at EatMore a better buy that the tomatoes at CannedStuff? Explain your answer. CannedStuff = 5 cans = $4.00 EatMore = $6.00 = 6.00 CannedStuff = $4.00 x 40 = $160 EatMore = $6.00 x 40 = $240 The tomatoes in Canned Stuff store is a better buy because it costs $6.00 for 40 tomatoes where as the store Eat More costs $240 for 40 cans of tomatoes, thus Canned Stuff is a better buy because it costs less then Eat More. Gus was trying to figure out how to think about the EatMore price cans of tomatoes for $6.00. He divided 7 by 6 and got 1.16666667. He then divided 6 by 7 and got 0.85714286. What does each of these numbers mean in the context of seven cans of tomatoes for $6.00? First Gus divided the amount of cans with the cost. The numbers say how much 1 can will cost which is not correct thus he will get the wrong answer.

Problem 3.2
Suppose you are assigned to help the cook order supplies.
How many cans of tomatoes would you advise the cook to buy to make spaghetti for 240 campers?Explain your answer.
240 = 40
6
I would advise the cook to order 40 cans of tomatoes for the 240 campers.
How much would these cans of tomatoes coast altogether?
$4.00 x 40=$160
It would cost $160 for 40 cans of tomatoes.
Problem 3.2 Follow-up
At the EatMore grocery store, you can buy seven cans of tomatoes for $6.00. The cans are the same size as the cans at the CannedStuff. Are the tomatoes at EatMore a better buy that the tomatoes at CannedStuff? Explain your answer.
CannedStuff = 5 cans = $4.00
EatMore = $6.00 = 6.00
CannedStuff = $4.00 x 40 = $160
EatMore = $6.00 x 40 = $240
The tomatoes in Canned Stuff store is a better buy because it costs $6.00 for 40 tomatoes where as the store Eat More costs $240 for 40 cans of tomatoes, thus Canned Stuff is a better buy because it costs less then Eat More.
